Є багато версій походження назви Чернігів: від імені князя Чорного, його доньки, похованих у великому кургані, хоча дослідження показують, що поховання слід віднести до 10ст, а отже назва виникла раніше. Друга версія - від назви племені чорнигів - чорних клобуків, люди носили чорний одяг. Мало віриться, що мешканці назвали б своє місто на честь Чорнобога. Існує і дуже проста і найбільш вірогідна версія: отримало свою назву місто від чорних гаїв, що його оточували.
На початку 10ст це вже було дуже розвинуте місто, яке входило з 884р в Київську Русь і було другим по значимості містом. А також дуже багатим, бо землі чернігівські були в лісах, в яких водилося багато цінних хутрових звірів. Також місто знаходилося недалеко від торгового шляху "з варяг в греки".
Місто вперше згадується в літопису під 907, але як вже велике місто в Київській Русі. Після загибелі Святослава, його син Ярополк вбив свого брата Олега, а потім був сам вбитий Володимиром, якій став Великим. Князь Володимир на князювання в містах посадив своїх синів. Після смерті почалося кровопролиття між братами за владу. Кияни Мстислава, якій княжив у Тмутаракані не прийняли, він посів на чернігівський престол. Маючи декілька військових суперечок з братом Ярославом, який мешкав в Новгороді, вони зуміли заключити мир і поділили землі. Так Чернігів став столицею князівства, що простиралося від Азовського моря до ріки Ока. Під час князівства Мстислава Чернігів в розквіті містобудування. Після його смерті Чернігів переходить до Ярослава, який зосереджує свої будівничі сили в Києві. Другий розквіт Чернігова відбувається за князівство сина Ярослава - Святослава, який започаткував династію чернігівських князів Святославичів. За його часи було побудовано Єлецький та Іллінський монастирі, та церкви на території дитинця.
