Є багато версій походження назви Чернігів: від імені князя Чорного, його доньки, похованих у великому кургані, хоча дослідження показують, що поховання слід віднести до 10ст, а отже назва виникла раніше. Друга версія - від назви племені чорнигів - чорних клобуків, люди носили чорний одяг. Мало віриться, що мешканці назвали б своє місто на честь Чорнобога. Існує і дуже проста і найбільш вірогідна версія: отримало свою назву місто від чорних гаїв, що його оточували.
На початку 10ст це вже було дуже розвинуте місто, яке входило з 884р в Київську Русь і було другим по значимості містом. А також дуже багатим, бо землі чернігівські були в лісах, в яких водилося багато цінних хутрових звірів. Також місто знаходилося недалеко від торгового шляху "з варяг в греки".
Місто вперше згадується в літопису під 907, але як вже велике місто в Київській Русі. Після загибелі Святослава, його син Ярополк вбив свого брата Олега, а потім був сам вбитий Володимиром, якій став Великим. Князь Володимир на князювання в містах посадив своїх синів.
