Місто вперше згадується в літопису під 907, але як вже велике місто в Київській Русі. Після загибелі Святослава, його син Ярополк вбив свого брата Олега, а потім був сам вбитий Володимиром, якій став Великим. Князь Володимир на князювання в містах посадив своїх синів. Після його смерті Чернігів переходить до Ярослава, який зосереджує свої будівничі сили в Києві. Другий розквіт Чернігова відбувається за князівство сина Ярослава - Святослава, який започаткував династію чернігівських князів Святославичів.
