Після смерті почалося кровопролиття між братами за владу. Кияни Мстислава, якій княжив у Тмутаракані не прийняли, він посів на чернігівський престол. Маючи декілька військових суперечок з братом Ярославом, який мешкав в Новгороді, вони зуміли заключити мир і поділили землі. Так Чернігів став столицею князівства, що простиралося від Азовського моря до ріки Ока. Під час князівства Мстислава Чернігів в розквіті містобудування. Після його смерті Чернігів переходить до Ярослава, який зосереджує свої будівничі сили в Києві. Другий розквіт Чернігова відбувається за князівство сина Ярослава - Святослава, який започаткував династію чернігівських князів Святославичів.
